Our Industry Partner, Joyce Demoss, Receives the NOLI Award.
Annually, five business partners of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools are honored for outstanding service and dedication to Career Technical Education. This year we nominated Joyce Demoss for the award and she was honored as one of the recipients. Mrs. Demoss has developed a program for our students to gain work experience, employability skills, and leadership through the various departments in which they complete their rotations. Her program supports several high schools in the area. She coordinates the placement and scheduling of these schools within the hospital every year. Last year alone, just from our school, we had over thirty students volunteering at Community Regional Medical Center on our assigned days. This was only possible due to her incredible managerial skills, our mutual trust, and the leadership she provides.
Washington Union High School HOSA State Champions Headed to International Competition in Dallas
Washington Union High School is proud to announce that three of our HOSA "Future Health Professionals" students have been crowned champions in the recent state competition, bringing home gold and bronze medals.
Deacon Yang, a junior, claimed the gold medal in the healthy lifestyles competition, which evaluates the participants' knowledge and understanding of healthy habits, including nutrition, exercise, stress management, and disease prevention. Deacon's dedication to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and his passion for educating others on the importance of healthy living were evident in his performance, earning him the top spot in the state competition.
Grenelei Finderup, a junior, took home the gold medal in the research poster competition, while Hector Madrigal, also a junior, secured the bronze medal in the same category. The research poster competition requires students to design and present a research project in a poster format, showcasing their knowledge and understanding of the scientific method and research techniques.
Grenelei's winning research poster focused on the prevalence of smoking among students in a Fresno title one high school, while Hector's research poster explored the effects of caffeine consumption in high schoolers; should we be concerned?. Both students showed impressive research skills and a strong understanding of their respective topics.
Their outstanding performance has earned them a spot in the International HOSA competition, which will take place in Dallas in the summer. As they prepare for the international competition, Deacon, Grenelei, and Hector are receiving support and guidance from their teachers and fellow students at Washington Union High School.
"We are incredibly proud of our HOSA state champions and their dedication to promoting healthy living and scientific research," said Principal Ivan Nuñez. "Their hard work and commitment to excellence are a testament to the quality of education they receive at Washington Union High School."
The International HOSA competition brings together high school students from across the world to showcase their knowledge and skills in various health-related fields.
